Commercial drivers strike: 22 arrested for disturbing public peace

The Ghana Police Service has nabbed 22 suspects within the Accra metropolis during Monday’s nationwide sit-down strike by commercial drivers.

According to a statement by the service administration, the said suspects were picked up for disturbing public peace amid the strike exercise.

“The suspects took advantage of the sit-down strike to disturb public peace notably at Anyaa, Sowutuom and Amasaman” the Police Service said.

It then noted that, all 22 suspects will be arraigned before court today December 7 2021, for various offences such as rioting, causing damage and blocking public road.

Suspension of strike

The Coalition of Commercial Transport Operators on Monday, December 6, 2021 embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike to protest for the scraping of some taxes on fuel to help reduce costs at the pumps.

Meanwhile, leaders of the union the commercial suspended the sit-down strike which left thousands of commuters stranded at various bus stations making it difficult for most workers to report to their offices.

A statement issued and signed by Godfred Abulbire, the general secretary of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU), said “the intended strike action which was scheduled to take effect Monday December, 6 2021 has been suspended.”

“We, therefore, entreat our cherished members to go back to their normal duties,” the statement added as leaders of the drivers union held talks with the Office of the President.
