The Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu has responded that his comments about the judiciary was not to defame the profession.
According to him, his comments were misinterpreted.
He noted that ”I am highly disappointed with the content of the Statement because the Association clearly misconstrued the content and the context of my statement.”
“For the avoidance of doubt, my statement was indeed deliberately and well thought out except that contrary to their assertion, it was never an attempt to scandalize the judiciary”
His remarks come after the Association of Magistrate and Judges of Ghana (AMJA) noted its intention to lodge a formal complain to the General Legal Council (GLC) for Lawyer Sosu to answer for his comments.
“If you are a political judge, you will be dealt with politically when political tenure changes hands”, the lawyer had said.
The AMJA said they find the MP’s statement as “reckless and misguided” since he should have known better as a lawyer.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), has condemned Sosu’s comment as an unfortunate statement that portrays ‘ignorance’ and ‘irresponsibility.”
However, in response to the AMJA, Mr. Sosu said the content and context of his comment was “misconstrued.”
“Again, I completely disagree with the Association when it said my statement was unprofessional and an unprovoked attack on the Judiciary. The statement was in no way an attempt to either scandalize and attack the Judiciary. Rather, it was a conditional statement cautioning Judges who may “allow themselves to be influenced politically to be partisan” he said.
Francis-Xavier Sosu continued that the release will not stop him from critiquing the Judiciary when need be.
He indicated that he has every right to demand that the judiciary be devoid of political influence, because he is fortified by a phrase in the National Anthem… “Bold to defend forever the cause of freedom and of rights.”
The MP urged the judicial body to accept his counsel in good faith as it goes to the very roots of democracy in the country.
Francis Xavier Sosu also called for citizens especially judges to stand for the truth and allegiance to the Coat of Arms and the 1992 Constitution to demand for the integrity of the code of conduct.
