Minister for Communication and Digitalization, Ursual Owusu-Ekuful, has extended the deadline for the SIM registration exercise by four more months.
The deadline which was initially March 31, 2022, has been extended to July 31, 2022.
A release signed by the Minister outlined a number of factors which impeded the registration exercise making it impossible to meet deadline.
According to the statement, as at March 17, 14,091,542 SIM cards have been linked to the Ghana card, 10,348,532 Bio-captures conducted and 99,445 new SIM cards registered.
However, 7.5 million citizens and residents were yet to obtain Ghana card to enable them register their SIM cards therefore could not meet the deadline.
Another reason outlined per the statement was that, more time was needed to update the SIM Registration App which is also being developed to facilitate registration of SIM cards for Ghanaians abroad which is intended to be in operation by mid April.
These factors, as stated in the communique, accounted for the extension of the deadline to ensure that every SIM card is registered and captured to produce credible database by the end of the exercise.
Also, the registration exercise, according to Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, will provide credible SIM database which will help address Cyber fraud and promote secure SIM card based transactions as part of the effort to digitally transform the economy.
