Heartbreak for Ghana as Benjamin Azamati withdraws from Athletics Championships

The Black Maidens of Ghana have been denied a place at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India after losing on penalties to Morocco in the final qualifying round.

They went into the reverse fixture with a two-goal lead having won the first leg in Accra, Ghana, but the Moroccans overturned the result in Rabat on Saturday night.

The game ended 2-0 in regulation time and 2-2 on aggregate sending the game into penalties. Ghana thus missed two of their kicks and eventually lost the shoot-out 4-2.

The Moroccans have since secured a spot in the FIFA U-17 tournament for the first time and will be playing in October later this year.

However, the Ghanaian contingent complained bitterly after the loss and accused the Moroccan Football Association of unfair treatment and injustice before and during the match.

According to handlers of the team, they were allegedly denied access to training at the match venue on Friday, June 3, 2022, 24 hours before the game as per the requirement.

Moreover, five key players of the Maidens missed out on the game due to the supposed manipulation of COVID-19 positive results. They were also reported to have been taken through an unusual medical check to confirm their gender.

Laughable to say the least. All our players and officials are vaccinated with boosters, we test for COVID and got cleared before embarking this Morocco trip.

Thanks for the supports always 🥰 we love you ma’am https://t.co/tuDec9MJaf

To worsen matters, an alleged chemical was sprayed in the Ghanaian dressing room where they were compelled to sit outside the dressing room after the break.

Our dressing room sprayed with chemicals and we had to sit outside through the break 🤨
