Ofori-Atta has been excellent; I can’t sack him – Akufo-Addo

Following incessant calls for the removal of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, President Akufo-Addo has asked Members of Parliament (MPs) within the New Patriotic Party to hold on till Ghana concludes negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The President appealed to the disgruntled MPs to give the Finance Minister about three more weeks within which discussions with the Fund for a balance of payment deal would have been concluded.

While pleading for extra time for the Minister, Akufo-Addo remarked that the IMF programme may be affected if Ken Ofori-Atta’s appointment is terminated.

At a meeting with the aggrieved MPs at the Jubilee House, Nana Akufo-Addo appealed for calm.

Reports indicate that the the MPs were not happy with the request.

It is however unclear if the majority caucus would go ahead to frustrate government business in Parliament as they earlier announced should the President decline their request.

Speaking in a press conference on Tuesday, leader of the MPs, Andy Appiah-Kubi stated that the call for Ofori-Atta’s resignation is a reflection of the views of the NPP caucus in parliament and the presidency has been duly notified.

“Notice is hereby served that until such persons as aforementioned are made to resign or removed from office, we members of the Majority caucus here in parliament will not participate in any business of government by or for the President [or] by any other minister.”
Mr Appiah-Kubi further threatened that “if our request is not responded to positively, we will not be present for the budget hearing, neither will we participate in the debate.”

The call for the head of the Finance Minister comes at a time the country is facing an economic downturn with the cedi depreciating quickly to become the worst performing currency against the dollar.
