Final funeral rites for Prof Ama Ata Aidoo slated for July 13

Thursday, July 13, 2023, has been announced as the date for the funeral rites of the late Professor Ama Ata Aidoo, the Ghanaian poet, playwright and author who died in May this year.

According to her family, a state funeral will hold at the forecourt of the State House, Accra for the deceased who died at age 81.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, having already announced a befitting state burial for the legendary writer has officially invited guests to honour the funeral at the forecourt of the State House.

Per the president’s invitation card, a pre-burial service is slated for 6 to 9 AM, with the burial service happening between 9 to 11 AM.

The stipulated dress code is “black and red,” President Akufo-Addo directed.

President Akufo-Addo whiles reacting to the death of the celebrated author in a tweet on Friday, June 2, said “I heard of the news of the death of Ama Ata Aidoo with sadness and sorrow” and added, “I extend my deepest sympathies and condolences to her children and family on their great loss.”

“Through her work, she made a tremendous contribution to the development of our country and continent and expressed so many of our feelings about our fate as Ghanaians and, indeed, as Africans.”

“We will miss her; the continent and the world will miss her. She had a reach that was beyond Ghana. May her soul rest in perfect peace until the Last Day of the Resurrection when we shall all meet again, Amen,” the president eulogised the late Ghanaian poet and playwright.
