A military officer with the 5 Infantry Battalion has allegedly shot himself dead near Michel Camp in the Greater Accra region, the Ghana Armed Forces has said.
According to a statement on the incident, Private Bayou Roger, the deceased, was part of a platoon from Southern Command performing duties at the Base Ammunition Depot and was sitting on his bed waiting to relieve his colleague at a duty post at “0800 hours when his rifle went off, hitting him under his chin, killing him instantly”.
The sad incident occurred on Saturday, 19 August 2023, at the Base Ammunition Depot near Michel Camp, the military said.
The deceased’s body has been conveyed to the 37 Military Hospital mortuary for preservation.
The statement added, “a team from the Homicide Unit of Ghana Police Service (Gbetsele Police Station) is collaborating with the Military Police to investigate the fatal incident”.
The military, however, expressed its deepest regrets to the bereaved family, colleagues, friends and loved ones of the deceased soldier.
