Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has defeated Kennedy Ohene Agyapong to become the the Presidential Candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the just ended primaries.

The Vice President polled 118,210 votes representing 61.47 percent of the valid votes cast to win the bragging rights at the recently held presidential primaries on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong finished second with 71,996 votes in what turned out to be a two-horse race.

Meanwhile, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former Minister of Food and Agriculture and Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency in the Ashanti Region garnered 1,459 and 781 votes respectively.

The election of Dr. Bawumia, makes him NPP’s leader to succeed President Akufo-Addo in the 2024 general elections.

He will go head-to-head with ex-President John Dramani Mahama, who secured the endorsement of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier this year.

The NPP party aims to break the eight year jinx to overcome the historical trend where no political party in Ghana has secured more than two consecutive terms under the Fourth Republic, spanning from 1992 to the present.
