The presidential ambitions of legislator for the people of Assin Central in the Central Region – Kennedy Agyapong – has failed to materialize after loosing the flagbearer contest to Vice President Dr. Bawumia.

His hopes of becoming the New Patriotic Party Presidential candidate in the 2024 general election became a thing of the past following the fierce contest.

In the party’s primaries organized on Saturday, November 4, 2023, Mr. Agyapong lost the flagbearer slot to the Vice President in the poll termed a two horse race.

The outspoken politician had 71,996 votes but was not enough to surpass Dr. Bawumia who accumulated 118,210 votes on the day to emerge victor.

The other contestants, former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and former Member of Parliament for Mampong, Francis Addai Nimoh polled 1,459 and 781 votes respectively.

The results means Kennedy Agyapong who had chalked up success in all the six elections he contested in his life has for the first time tasted a defeat.

He had contested for the Parliamentary seat in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and won all.
