Four Chinese nationals sustained varied degrees of injuries at a mining site at Akyem Akokoaso in the Eastern Region following a robbery attack, Angelonline.com.gh can report.

This incident, according to Angel News’ Francis Armah occurred in the early hours of Friday, February 9, 2024, when about 15 armed robbers stormed a mining concession being operated by a Chinese company, Jia Xin Industrial Company.

The report continued that the robbers took away an undisclosed amount of money and two gold bars from the mining site.

He recounted that the four Chinese miners who sustained severe injuries are receiving treatment at the hospital with one of the victims said to have sustained an injury in his testicles.

A long standing tension between the youth in the area and a Chinese mining company in the area is believed to have been the remote cause of the attack.

The residents have accused Jia Xin Industrial of unlawfully involving themselves in illegal mining activities alleging further that the the company lacks proper licensing for extensive underground mining.

Jia Xin Industrial Company is said to have inherited the prospecting license from Ofosua Mining and Construction Company, following approval by then-Minister John Peter Amewu in 2018. The youth in the community were disatisfied with this arrangement leading to constant confrontations between the company and the indigenes.
