The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim South Constituency, Kwaku Asante-Boateng has said he is not surprised that the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) is kicking against the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

According to the lawmaker, CDD and other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) are been funded by these Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender communities.

Mr. Asante-Boateng believes that has contributed to CDD’s call on President Akufo-Addo not to assent the anti-gay bill into law.

The anti-LGBTQ+ bill was unanimously passed by Parliament on February 28, after it had gone through the various stages of reading. nearly three years of deliberation. The bill seeks to criminalize the activities of the LGBTQ+ community. It imposes a prison sentence of up to three years for anyone convicted of being identifying as LGBTQ+.

However, some civil society groups including CDD have threatened legal action if President Akufo-Addo assents to the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill.

“Most programmes and activities of the CSOs are funded by Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. So, I am not surprised that CDD is criticizing Parliament for passing the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

“And I would not in any way fault them because they receive money from these donors to run their agencies. So, it is impossible for them to support the anti-LGBTQ+ bill and its passage,” Mr. Asante-Boateng on Saturday, March 2, 2024…,” he said on Onua TV.

He emphasized Ghana’s culture and tradition are against activities of LGBTQ+ hence he is rooting for the passage of the bill to ensure such activities in our societies are clamped down.
