Ben Ephson tips Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh (pictured) as potential running mate choice for the New Patriotic Party flagbearer

The Managing Editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper, Benjamin Ephson Junior says Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh is potential running mate choice for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on JoyNews TV’s AM Show Monday, March 4, 2024, Mr Ephson said: “…if I have to bet, I will bet on Dr. Opoku Prempeh.”

The revelation adds a layer of intrigue to the unfolding narrative of who will stand beside Dr Bawumia in the quest for leadership.

The seasoned pollster and political analyst emphasised the crucial role the Ashanti Region plays in electoral dynamics, asserting that for the NPP to secure a commanding position in the December 7 polls, the running mate must hail from this politically significant region.

He backed his claim with the statistic that approximately 4% of voters cast their ballots based on ethnicity.

However, Ben Ephson clarified that the choice should transcend mere regional affiliation, stating, that the running mate shouldn’t just be an Akan or from the Ashanti Region; rather, it should be somebody from the region who can maximise votes for the party.

He elaborated on the strategy, emphasising the need to select someone capable of not just representing the region but also ensuring maximum voter turnout.

“If you want to maximise your vote from your stronghold, you will have to pick someone who will bring you maximum votes, and I think that Dr. Bawumia will fall on Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh to give maximum votes among the possible running mates from Ashanti,” Ephson pointed out, setting the stage for a political chess game that could significantly impact the upcoming elections.

As speculation mounts and political enthusiasts eagerly await the official announcement, the strategic move by Dr. Bawumia, as hinted by Ephson, adds a layer of suspense and anticipation to the unfolding drama in the Ghanaian political landscape.

The choice of running mate, especially from the politically pivotal Ashanti Region, seems poised to be a game-changer in the race for political supremacy.
