The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated that his vice-presidential candidate will not be a “driver’s mate” but a “co-driver.”
This response came after New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia encouraged Ghanaians to vote for him to give him the mandate to implement policies, referring to himself as a “driver’s mate” rather than the “driver.”
John Mahama during a campaign tour in Chiana-Paga constituency in the Upper East Region said that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, who has extensive experience, will not be relegated to the role of a “driver’s mate” in his administration.
He noted that while women make up a significant portion of Ghana’s population, they have yet to hold the two highest offices in the country, the presidency and the vice-presidency.
“The women in Ghana are more than we the men, they are the majority of our population, unfortunately even though they have served served in many offices in Ghana, they have never said in the office of Vice President and and the office of President…,”
Mahama added that if the NDC wins power, Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang will be in charge of the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Health.
“When we come into office, she is not going to be a driver’s mate, she is going to be my co-driver because she is going to be responsible for the ministry of Gender and Social Protection, she is going to be responsible for the Ministry of Education, the education of our children she will be responsible, she will be responsible for the Ministry of Health, our healthcare she will be responsible, she will be responsible for the social ministries and so she will not be a driver’s mate, she will be a co-driver…,” Mahama said.
