2 police officers caged over ‘Jubilee House’ robbery

An Accra Circuit court has remanded two police officers, General Lance Corporal Philmon Agbevem and General Lance Corporal Peter Kwame Badagbor into custody for alleged robbery in front of the Jubilee House, the seat of government.

Narrating the facts of the case to the court, ASP Kofi Anane who was led by ASP Emmanuel Haligah said, the complainant in the case is Emmanuel Amerodor a motor rider living at Adetan, Accra.

He said on July 22, 2024, the two accused persons while off duty on police motorbike with registration No. GP 8145, arrested the complainant upon information that the he and a rider had allegedly snatched a victim’s purse containing her mobile phone and other personal effects at the National theatre towards Sankara roundabout.

The two Police officers who were dressed in uniform and armed with rifle, pursued the said motor riders and accosted them at Christ the King traffic light, in front of the Jubilee House.

In an attempt to arrest them, the rider managed to escape while the pillion rider who happens to be the complainant was arrested. The two accused persons subjected the complainant to severe beatings and handcuffed him.

Both officers forcefully transferred cash the sum of GHC3,700.00 from the complainant’s phone onto a mobile phone number with the name HOPE ALOVORDZI and again took cash sum of GHC120.00 from him.

The complainant reported the matter to the Cantonments Police and subsequently to the CID headquarters for thorough investigation.

On August 8, the two accused Police Officers were arrested and on interrogation both admitted having arrested the complainant but denied robing him of the amount stated on the charge sheet.

ASP Kofi Anane told the court to remand the accused persons to police custody as they are still investigating.

Lawyer for the accused persons, Andy Vortia prayed the court to grant them bail but the court refused.

The trial judge, Evelyn Asamoah remanded the accused persons into police custody and adjourned the case to September 10, 2024.
