The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has ended the decades-long dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akuapem South Constituency of the Eastern Region during the 2024 general elections.

Lawrencia Adwoa Dziwornu, who contested the parliamentary elections on the NDC’s ticket achieved this historic feat on Saturday, December 7, when 31,029 people cast their votes.

She obtained 15,438 votes [50.22%], narrowly defeating Eric Yeboah Apeadu of the NPP, who garnered 15,304 votes [49.78%], ensuring the NDC snatches the parliamentary seat for the first time in more than a decade.

This victory marks the first time in 12 years that the NDC has claimed the parliamentary seat in the constituency.

Akuapem South, traditionally an NPP stronghold, was previously represented by O.B. Amoah, who decided not to seek re-election. The NPP then presented Eric Yeboah Apeadu as its candidate after winning the constituency primaries.

Mr. Apeadu after Saturday’s exercise fell short in the fiercely contested race to Madam Dziwornu with a margin of 134 votes.

Despite the NDC’s parliamentary victory, the NPP retained the constituency in the presidential race, with 16,516 votes for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, compared to 13,232 votes for the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama.

In her congratulatory message, Lawrencia Adwoa Dziwornu expressed deep gratitude to the people of Akuapem South for their support in making her dream a reality.

“Thank you, Akuapem South! What began as a dream in 2014 is now a reality, by God’s grace,” she stated, attributing her victory to divine intervention.

The MP-elect also extended appreciation to the clergy, traditional authorities, party executives, and supporters for their unwavering trust and effort in breaking the NPP’s monopoly.

“I thank the Almighty, the clergy, traditional leaders, the Akuapem South NDC chairman Kojo Okyere Benny, executives, and party faithful for their unwavering support. To the amazing people of Akuapem South, your trust humbles me,” she remarked.

Madam Dziwornu assured her constituents of an inclusive leadership approach and promised development and a fair share of it for all.

“I pledge to fulfill the seven key policies and ensure development reaches every corner of Akuapem South. Together, we will build a constituency we are all proud of,” she said.
