Traders in Akyem Oda in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region, have expressed concern over a possible disease outbreak, highlighting cholera as a major risk due to waste pollution within the municipality.

According to Angel News’ Van Brown, filth is increasing in the municipality as Zoomlion Ghana refuses to clean up due to unpaid salary arrears.

Some traders at the Akyem Oda main lorry station and Central Market told the reporter that the rate at which refuge is left unattended in areas such as the market, lorry stations, streets, and gutters is alarming and poses a health threat to residents.

They warned that cholera and other sanitation-related diseases could easily spread due to the poor sanitary conditions people are exposed to daily.

Some traders added that despite the sanitation challenges, the Assembly continues to collect waste levies (refuge fees) from them.

However, the Assembly’s leadership has failed to address these sanitation concerns, the traders hinted.

The traders called on the Municipal Assembly authorities to act urgently and resolve the issue.

Responding to the matter, the Municipal Coordinating Director for Birim Central Municipality, Haruna Amadu Zure, assured that the Assembly would take all necessary steps to clear the waste.

He urged residents to avoid littering as his outfit takes pragmatic measures to resolve the issue permanently.
