President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Greater Accra Regional Minister and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCES) to take firm action against people who have built on waterways.
During his tour of flood-prone areas in the Greater Accra Region, President Mahama observed that some people had deliberately built structures that blocked streams, causing severe flooding.
He visited areas such as Abofu-Achimota, Mallam Junction, Kaneshie-Accra Academy Main Entrance, and Circle.
During his visit to Mallam Junction, he stressed the need to enforce regulations to prevent flooding and protect lives and property.
According to him, these floods are destroying properties and costing lives, making it necessary for the government to enforce by-laws.
At Circle, President Mahama spoke about the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project, which was awarded a contract last year to desilt major drains.
He expressed disappointment that the work had not been completed during the dry season before the rains started.
He warned Ghanaians that due to this delay, severe flooding is likely.
However, he assured the public that efforts would be made to minimize the destruction of properties and loss of lives as soon as possible.
