Brand expert advocates for practical experience in tertiary education

A brand expert and lecturer at the African University of Communications and Business (AUCB), Mr. Peter Wonders, in a bid to push for reform in higher education systems, has called for greater emphasis on practical experience within university programs.

Mr. Wonders, widely known as RSM, argues that current educational practices focus too heavily on theory, leaving students unprepared for the realities of the job market.

Highlighting the potential barrier this poses for students, he asked, “What happens to their education if they don’t secure employment after graduation?”

To address this issue, Mr. Wonders has organized a poster presentation event for Level 300 students of AUCB, allowing them to showcase their creativity and brand messaging skills.

The event, scheduled for April 26, 2025, at the AUCB campus in Adabraka, will feature industry professionals who will assess the students’ projects, which include brand names, logos, slogans, and mission statements.

“This initiative will highlight the real-world applications of marketing, communication, and business strategy,” Wonders explained ahead of the program when speaking to the media.

He emphasized the importance of moving beyond traditional academic displays to foster innovative and market-ready ideas among students.

The event, part of the “Branding and Brand Management” course at AUCB, aims to deepen the focus on creative and entrepreneurial education.

“Students will engage in interactive exhibitions and team showcases, explaining the concepts behind their brands and the production processes involved,” he said.

.

The university anticipates strong attendance from industry professionals, alumni, and the public, providing students with valuable networking opportunities.

RSM noted, “This will help students understand branding in a practical way by giving them the chance to create and present their own brand identity.”

The Branding Presentation Day represents a crucial step toward bridging the gap between academia and industry and underscores AUCB’s commitment to preparing students for successful careers in the ever-evolving landscape of branding and business.
