A 12-year-old boy, Kojo Adu, tragically lost his life after a canoe capsized in the Ochi River near Assin Ochiso in the Central Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Kojo was pronounced dead upon arrival at the local clinic, while four other children were rescued and subsequently hospitalised.
The victims included three siblings and their friend, along with the canoe’s paddler.
According to reports, the children were en route to Amoanda in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam district to search for avocados, with the only route being a perilous canoe crossing.
Residents have urged the government, particularly the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, and Finance Minister Cassie Ato Forson, as well as other stakeholders, to construct a footbridge over the Ochi River.
“We’re pleading with our leaders that our children go to school every day; they cross the river, and sometimes the men are not around to help us.
“We’re appealing to the government to support our needs,” they appealed.
