The Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has issued a cautionary notice to the public, especially residents living downstream of the Weija Dam, as minimal spillage of excess water from the dam has commenced.

GWCL emphasized that evacuating the area has become necessary to safeguard the structural integrity of the dam and to avert any potential disaster.

In a statement, GWL noted that the current level of the dam is 45ft, which is 2ft below the maximum safe operating level of 47ft.

However, it assured the public of closely monitoring the dam level on an hourly basis due to its steady increase.

“The Management of GWL is by this release sounding a word of caution to inhabitants downstream to evacuate the area to forestall any eventuality,” it stated.

Additionally, the Ga West Municipal Assembly has been advised to desilt the estuary to facilitate the smooth flow of excess water into the sea and to clear accumulated refuse along the river course.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), National Security, Chiefs of Weija, Oblogo, Tetegu, Gbawe, opinion leaders, and all stakeholders, including institutions and organizations with properties downstream, have also been informed of the development and the current situation at the dam.

Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adakope, and surrounding communities.

“Residents downstream must heed all warnings from NADMO and other agencies mandated to manage disaster.”

GWL urges the public to fully cooperate in this exercise to prevent a recurrence of past disasters and apologizes to affected persons for the inconvenience.

“We kindly request that all affected residents remain cooperative and adhere to any safety instructions issued by Municipal Assembly to ensure their safety and prevent any untoward incidents,” it added.
