The act of persuading some youth in the country with money to earn public support through praise, has become a norm among Ghanaian political figures, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Greater Accra Region has alleged.
Making this claim is Kwasi Poku, Chairman of the NPP in Tema West, who stated that the political space is now seen as a winner-takes-all arena for wealthier individuals, rather than for those with wisdom and reasoning beyond partisanship.
Owing to this, he made a damning claim indicating that many politicians influence public opinion to gain undeserved attention. hinting that the thousands of party faithful who greet them at political gatherings are often part of orchestrated efforts.
“Sometimes you ought to tread cautiously as politicians, both NPP and the NDC, and other political parties, especially regarding the kind of people we choose as leaders. We have defined partisan politics by wealth, as though the wealthier individual is, the more capable they are of becoming a leader. So, when they sit on various platforms, you see them being hailed with praises.
“Whenever you hear a politician being hailed on any platform, it is not as a result of his good work done, he has rather influenced the citizens with money,” he exposed.
The outspoken politician made the claim on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, during his appearance on The Angel Morning Show (AMS), hosted by Saddick Adams on Angel TV.
Mr. Poku hints that the thousands of party faithful who greet them at political gatherings with titles are often part of orchestrated efforts.
Mr. Poku urged Ghanaians not to allow themselves to be deceived by such politicians.
Though he observed that “there are genuine politicians in the country,” he warned the public against idolising political leaders, arguing that in the long run, many of them only look out for their personal interests and ignore the challenges faced by ordinary citizens.
