Hajj fare could drop below GHC 50,000 next year if cedi maintains strength – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has said that Hajj fares could drop to GHC 50,000 from the current GHC 62,000 if the Ghanaian cedi continues to strengthen against the US dollar.

According to the President, his government has already reduced Hajj fares from 75,000 Ghana cedis to 60,000 cedis.

Speaking during his Thank You Tour in Kintampo, Bono East Region on May 29, 2025, President Mahama further explained that at the time the fares were reduced, the cedi was trading at GHC 15.5 to $1. Based on this rate, the $4,000 cost for Hajj came to GHC 62,000.

“I can foresee that, with the performance of the cedi, because at the time we started paying for the Hajj, the cedi was at GHC 15.5 to $1, and so the fare that we came up with for the $4,000 that it cost to do the Hajj came to GHC 62,000.”

He assures that, based on calculations and the current performance of the cedi at GHC 10.5, the Hajj fare might drop below GHC 50,000 next year if the dollar continues to weaken.

He said if the cedi continues to perform well, it will bring great relief to Muslims who plan to go on Hajj.

“Next year, if you do a calculation where the cedi is currently, at GHC 10.5, it means that next year, the fare for Hajj will probably go below GHC 50,000, and so, if the cedi keeps performing the way it is, it will give more relief to our brothers and sisters who will decide to embark on the Hajj.”
