The Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) prolonged detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has finally come to an end.

His release followed his fulfillment of bail conditions of GH₵50 million with two sureties, who were required to justify the amount.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested on May 27, 2025, and is reportedly under investigation for alleged financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

Despite his legal team meeting the bail requirements on Friday, May 30, his release was delayed due to a legal application seeking a review of the bail terms.

However, after careful consideration, Wontumi’s legal team formally withdrew the motion filed at the High Court in Accra on May 30, which hearing were scheduled on Tuesday, June 3.

In a significant development and a sigh of relief for the NPP fraternity, Chairman Wontumi was formally released after successfully meeting his bail conditions in the late hours of Monday, June 2.

Confirming his release to NPP supporters who had shown solidarity with the embattled Chairman was the General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua, at EOCO headquarters.

“I can confirm that Chairman Wontumi has been released, he has gone home to relax, we will inform you of any new development,” he stated.
