Chief Fire Officer calls for relocation of squatters following devastating Tema fire

Must Read

The Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow-Sapong, has urgently requested the immediate relocation of squatters from key industrial zones in the Tema enclave to prevent future disasters.

Her appeal comes in the wake of a tragic fire outbreak on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, behind the Ferro Fabric Metal Company in the Tema Heavy Industrial Area, which razed over 500 makeshift structures and displaced hundreds of residents.

During their visit on Thursday, June 19, 2025, officials assessed the situation and found that countless squatters had lost everything in the late-night inferno.

The Chief Fire Officer expressed grave concern over the escalating risks posed by squatters in industrial zones.

She emphasised that the presence of unauthorised settlements not only hinders emergency response efforts but also exacerbates the risks of fire and flooding.

“Hundreds of families, now homeless, are struggling to come to terms with their losses and are appealing for urgent support.

“Among them are schoolchildren and nursing mothers in desperate need of shelter, food, and basic supplies,” she stated.

Janet Mensah Abrompah, the Deputy Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for Tema Metro, also urged the private sector, humanitarian organisations, and individuals to rally together and support the victims in this critical time.
