The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country, specifically, the University of Ghana.

In a press release dated Wednesday, June 26, 2025, the Service revealed that the recent rise in cases has been observed within the university community. However, all reported cases are mild with no hospital admissions.

GHS stated that it is working closely with the university authorities to contain the situation and monitor the evolving outbreak.

“GHS is actively collaborating with the University authorities to contain the outbreak and review measures in response to the evolving situation,” the release signed by the Acting Director General of GHS, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea said.

It emphasized that ongoing surveillance is being conducted nationwide in partnership with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) as part of the national influenza and COVID-19 monitoring programme.

Despite the World Health Organization’s declaration that COVID-19 is no longer a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the GHS warned that the pandemic is not over.

“Sporadic outbreaks, which may follow seasonal patterns, are expected to occur globally,” it stated, urging the public to remain vigilant.

The public has been reminded to adhere strictly to preventive measures including maintaining social distance, wearing masks in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas, frequent hand-washing, and self-isolation when unwell.

Individuals with symptoms such as “fever, cough, sore throat, or breathing difficulties” have been advised to seek immediate medical care.

He urged the public to prioritize health and safety, and to support the national response through responsible behavior and cooperation.

Reassuring the public and the university community, the GHS stated that “All necessary steps are being taken to prevent further spread and to control the outbreak effectively.”
