Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from the Government of China to construct a modern market in Aflao.

The development is consistent with a promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 electioneering campaign.

The grant is expected to boost economic development in the Volta Region and enhance trade links across the West African sub-region.

The official signing ceremony took place on July 7, 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra.

The Government was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa while the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, signed on behalf of the Chinese Government.

Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that the grant was secured “on the express instructions of President John Mahama,” reinforcing his commitment to delivering on his campaign pledge to the people of Aflao.

He recalled a similar gesture during the Mills/Mahama administration when a Chinese grant was used to construct the Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast.

“A similar grant amount from China was used to construct the impressive Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast during the Mills/Mahama era,” the minister confirmed in a statement, drawing a parallel between the past and present infrastructural initiatives.

Describing the benefits of the new project, Mr. Ablakwa noted that;

“The new befitting modern Aflao market is expected to boost economic activity, link the Ho and Lome markets and improve livelihoods in an enclave which is a major West African trading hub.”
