The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, embarked on an unannounced inspection of portions of the Ramsar sites located within the Tema Municipality.

She was accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive (Mayor) of Tema, Ebi Bright on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

The visit revealed extensive encroachment on the protected wetland, with several individuals and corporate bodies illegally occupying and developing the land for private use, contrary to its ecological purpose and legal status.

Madam Akweley Ocloo, deeply concerned by the flagrant abuse of the Ramsar site, issued a strong warning to all unlawful occupants, describing their actions as both illegal and detrimental to the environmental integrity of the region.

She stressed that the government will not condone any unauthorized development within protected areas.

In a decisive move, the Regional Minister announced that a demolition exercise will commence on Monday, August 4, to reclaim the encroached portions of the Ramsar site.

To that effect, she advised all individuals, companies and structures within the affected area to vacate immediately, cautioning that no individual or entity will be spared during the operation and the government will not be liable for any loss of property resulting from the demolition.

“This is not just about enforcing the law it is about preserving our natural resources for the benefit of future generations. Those who have illegally occupied Ramsar lands must take this notice seriously. We will act swiftly and decisivel,” she stated.

The public is thereby encouraged to cooperate fully with authorities and to report any further encroachments or environmental violations.

The Regional Coordinating Council reteirated its committment to enforcing land use regulations and safeguarding the region’s ecological zones.
