Parliament has passed the Social Protection Bill 2025 to establish the Social Protection Fund.

The purpose of the Fund is to provide a legal framework for social protection programmes to improve accessibility and equity in the delivery of social services to the underprivileged in society.

In addition, the Fund will provide financial resources for the management of emergencies and the mobilisation of funds for social protection delivery.

Presenting the report of the Committee on Gender, Children and Social Welfare, was the Chairperson of the Committee, Helen, Adjoa Ntoso.

She noted that the Committee acknowledges that providing a legal framework for social protection programmes and policies is necessary to improve accessibility, accountability and equity in the delivery of social services to underprivileged persons in the Ghanaian society.

The programmes include the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty LEAP, Ghana School Feeding Programme, Basic Education Capitation Grants, and National Health Insurance Exemption, among others.

She was of the view that the promulgation of a statute in this regard would therefore ensure protection for the socially disadvantaged, and establish institutional frameworks to support economically handicapped persons and individuals affected by national or local emergencies.
