The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not participate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election, citing a desire to honour the memory of the late Member of Parliament, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed, and to preserve national unity in the wake of tragedy.

Dr. Mohammed was among eight individuals who died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, while on official duty. His passing triggered the constitutional requirement for a by-election to fill the vacant seat.

In a statement issued Monday, August 11, and signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said the decision was reached at a National Steering Committee meeting held at its headquarters in Accra.

According to the opposition party, they invoked Article 10(10)(1) of its constitution in formalizing the resolution.

“The New New Patriotic Party (NPP) has resolved that it would not take part in the Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election,” It announced.

The NPP said “It would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to competitive processes in search of a replacement for the departed MP.”

“The tension and acrimony often associated with the conduct of by-elections in the country should be avoided,” the statement added.

The party also framed the decision as part of a broader national tribute, urging Ghanaians to continue the fight against illegal mining known locally as galamsey as a way of honouring the late MP’s legacy.
