The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to participate in the upcoming Akwatia by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025.

The NDC emphasized that the incumbent government remains firmly in the race for the forthcoming election.

In a statement signed by the party’s Deputy National Communications Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, the NDC said, “Kindly note, we are contesting the Akwatia by-election. The NDC is contesting the Akwatia by-election come the 2nd of September 2025.”

Mr. Ako Gunn clarification comes a day after the NPP announced that it had backed off contesting the Tamale Central parliamentary by-election following the passing of Member of Parliament Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed. They noted the decision had become neccessary to honour the late lawmaker.

Mr. Gunn described the NPP’s decision on the Tamale Central by-election as “the best decision they have taken in recent times,” but alleged it was a strategy to avoid defeat and court public sympathy ahead of the Akwatia contest.

“This is not the first time that a political party has refused to contest in a by-election. The NDC also refused to contest in Ejisu after the demise of John Kumah,” the statement noted indicating that the NPP’s decision was not the first time a political party is withdrawing from a by-election.

Cautioning against complacency, Mr. Gunn recalled that during the Ablekumah North rerun, the NPP initially declared its withdrawal but later became the first to campaign on the ground.

“Let’s also be careful of the NPP when they say they are not contesting. In Ablekumah North rerun, the NPP declared that they were not contesting, but in fact, they were the first to hit the grounds,” he warned on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

He urged party members to remain circumspect in their public remarks during this period of mourning.
