Residents of Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Constituency of the Eastern Region, are grappling with acute water scarcity, following the adverse effects of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
Angelonline.com.gh can confirm, the toll of the practice has significantly affected the supply of potable water, which residents depend on.
This is because the Kyebi Water Treatment Plant, the primary source of potable water for the community has been shut down temporarily.
The shutdown, according to sources took effect Thursday, August 20, 2025, and has now entered its fifth day.
“Now the facility is shut down temporarily,” a resident said, citing the presence of harmful chemicals and the need to prevent any unforeseen circumstances.
The situation has left residents struggling with limited access to potable water for essential daily activities such as cooking, bathing, drinking, and other uses.
“Bathing has become a major issue for some of us for over two months now,” another resident stated.
