Akwatia bye-election: Police urged to be on high alert during vote count

The third National Vice Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Osman Masawudu, has called on the Ghana Police to exercise heightened vigilance, particularly during the vote count in the Akwatia bye-election.

During the Akwatia election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, he explained that violence often erupts when a party realises it is on the verge of winning or losing when votes are being counted.

“My request to the police is that they remain vigilant in terms of their security alert, especially after voting ends when sorting out and counting begin, as this is when chaos is most likely to occur.

“The chaos arises when a particular party realises it is about to lose or win, sometimes, that is where unnecessary riots start,” he said.

According to him, the large police deployment in Akwatia means that any failure to maintain peace would undermine the credibility of the police.

Mr. Masawudu stressed that the police must take a firm stance against anyone who attempts to disrupt the peace during the electoral process.

“Anyone who wants to cause nuisance, the police must make them know that Ghana is bound by laws,” he emphasized.

He then urged all residents of Akwatia to go out to cast their votes fearlessly, assuring them that the NPP’s Parliamentary Candidate, Solomon Asumadu, would emerge victorious.
