Member of Parliament for Akim Oda Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of abusing executive authority through the use of presidential instruments.

According to him, the President’s actions undermine the constitutional framework by exerting undue influence over all three branches of government, the Executive, Judiciary, and Legislature.

Mr. Acquah argued that this overreach has significantly disrupted the distinct roles and responsibilities assigned to each arm of government, effectively subverting the principles of separation of powers and checks and balances.

“Today the President is controlling executives, legislature, Judiciary. So where is the separation of powers and checks and balances?” he quizzed on Angel TV.

He argued that there is no institutional balance under the current NDC administration.

His remarks follow the dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo by President Mahama, a move the MP described as bad precedented and deeply troubling.

Speaking further, the MP added that, the President’s action has destabilized the very institution meant to uphold justice.

“…Now, the very rock and foundation of the Judiciary is shaken,” he stated boldly.

According to Mr. Acquah, this sets a historic precedent, one that could have lasting implications for Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“President Mahama has clearly shown the Judiciary that the powers they once held have been taken away. For the first time, no one can defend that he is innocent. What he has done will go down in Ghana’s history books, he sacked a Chief Justice. It is a major achievement.”
