TMA launches decongestion exercise to enhance safety around Republic School
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has embarked on a major decongestion exercise around the Republic School enclave in Tema Community 4.

This operation aims to remove unauthorized structures and dismantle makeshift hideouts allegedly used by sex workers and drug peddlers, which officials state have become a negative influence on the pupils of the school.

Madam Ebi Bright, the Mayor of Tema, who led the exercise, explained that the move is necessary to protect the safety and moral wellbeing of students while restoring order and sanitation in the area.

She emphasised that the Republic School area holds historical significance and must be preserved for future generations.

“From sanitation the way the people have used this place as dumping grounds, we started from Republic because this is the first school Dr. Kwame Nkrumah established in Central Tema.

“We’ve assigned security personnel here, and the thing is that when there’s an unused space, not even putting any structure or anything on it, anybody will also use it as they want.

“So every department is here, and today after clearing here, they’ll start planting trees that’ll shape this school and will show that this is a school.

“We’re cleaning the school, and today is the day we’re launching the school project, which is a project the Assemblies have put their funds into to build a new school,” she stated.

Abraham Adjei Tawiah, the President of the Tema Youth, described the exercise as long overdue, adding that it would enhance the safety of students and improve the general outlook of the community.
