Leader of the Union Government, Akwasi Addai Odike, has said that the proliferation of illegal mining has the potential to trigger a civil war in Ghana if drastic measures are not put in place to curb the menace.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Monday, November 3, 2025, he stated that Galamsey might spark widespread violence, citing series of pocket of voilence that have occured in mining communities in connection with the practice.

“Galamsey might ignite civil war. I heard a British advisor said that in sometime to come Ghana will face a civil war because if Galamsey,” Odike stated.

Odike asserted that the President John Dramani Mahama, should declare a state of emergency, highlighting that the situation may become so dire that regular army units might struggle to counter the threat, potentially leading to the emergence of extremist individuals and groups resorting to terrorism.

“The people will become terrorist, whom the regular army cannot fight.” he said.

He indicated that the seed of violence is being planted in Ghana through the issue of Galamsey, which could result in conflict, referencing examples from other countries.

“The fights happening Boko Haram, Sudan, Democratic republic of Congo is being planted in Ghana… It would get to a time where there would be barricades, preventing people the access to certain towns.” he added.
