The National Media Commission (NMC) is set to bolster its regulatory role in Ghana’s media landscape, as revealed by the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson during the presentation of the 2026 Budget, themed “Resetting for Growth, Jobs, and Economic Transformation”.

According to the Minister, the NMC has been actively mediating disputes between radio stations and traditional authorities nationwide, promoting cultural sensitivity and media professionalism.

“The Commission’s facilitation of dialogue between community leaders and media operators helped to promote responsible broadcasting and mutual respect between traditional institutions and the media,” Mr. Forson stated on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

He mentioned that to combat misinformation and exploitative content, the NMC has partnered with key stakeholders including the Bank of Ghana and the NCA through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Looking ahead to 2026, he disclosed plans to enhance citizen access to redress mechanisms.

“In 2026, the Commission will operationalise Regional Complaints Settlement Offices to decentralise complaint handling and enhance citizens’ access to redress mechanisms,” he said.

He added taht a key innovation will be the introduction of a Ghana-specific Media Freedom Index blending quantitative and qualitative assessments for accurate benchmarking of media independence.

“It will also introduce a Ghana-specific Media Freedom Index that blends quantitative data and qualitative assessments, enabling more accurate benchmarking of media independence,” he revealed.

Cassiel Forson further noted that a new Legislative Instrument is slated for drafting to introduce Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)-compliant complaint procedures, particularly vital during election periods.

The NMC will also review existing media guidelines in collaboration with stakeholders to modernise regulatory standards and strengthen accountability.

“The Commission will further undertake a comprehensive review of existing media guidelines, in collaboration with stakeholders, to modernise regulatory standards and strengthen accountability in the media space,” Mr. Forson added.

These measures underscore the government’s commitment to fostering a responsible and professional media environment in Ghana as part of broader economic transformation goals.
