Deputy General Secretary of the United Party (UP), Nana Yaw Sarpong, has called on the government to reallocate funds currently used for nursing training allowances to improve health sector infrastructure.

He believes that the government can use the financial provisions for nursing trainees to support the overall health sector development.

He questioned the rationale behind providing allowances to trainee nurses while students pursuing university degrees do not receive similar financial support.

“I don’t understand why we should be paying allowances to nursing and teacher training students. Why is it that a university student doesn’t receive an allowance, but those in training colleges do?” he asked on Angel TV.

Mr. Sarpong argued that the Gh¢470 million budget allocation specifically for nursing trainee allowances could be better spent on constructing roads and advancing projects outlined in the ‘Agenda 111’ initiative.

“This Gh¢470 million being given as allowances could be redirected towards essential infrastructure, such as roads and development projects in Agenda 111,” he added.
