Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Ministry of Health to roll out free primary healthcare beginning next year.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series held at the Presidency, he noted that government has allocated an amount of GHS1.5 billion for this free primary healthcare initiative.

He stated that the project will still fall under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He mentioned that the ministry will focus on promoting healthcare and the prevention of diseases.

“We will be looking at enhanced promotive healthcare and preventive healthcare and that will give rise to the early detection of the diseases, not to even get to the complication stage,” Mr. Akandoh added on Monday, December 1, 2025.

He noted that primary healthcare accounts for about 80% of the country’s health needs, therefore having it right will lead to a stronger health sector.

According to the Health Minister, the establishment of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, was as a result of the spread of non-communicable diseases affecting people in the country.
