The Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the lives of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with the disbursement of essential items and equipment under the District Assemblies Common Fund.

The initiative aims to economically empower beneficiaries and reduce dependency and street begging by supporting income-generating activities.

The event, held on December 23, 2025, and supervised by the Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Raymond Nana Ebbah in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, and the Member of Parliament, Nicholas Amankwah saw beneficiaries receive several items.

The items include chest freezers, fridges, fufu machines, cement, roofing sheets, provisions, sewing machines, and an electronic wheelchair, among other livelihood support items.

Speaking at the ceremony, Municipal Chief Executive Raymond Nana Ebbah emphasized that the support was targeted and demand driven, where beneficiaries specifically requested them based on their individual needs to start or enhance their businesses.

The MCE announced that the 65 beneficiaries who received items in the current phase will not be eligible for the next disbursement.

According to him, this decision aims to ensure that other association members who didn’t receive items this time around get their share in the next phase.

Addressing the beneficiaries, the MCE, Raymond Nana Ebbah, urged them to make productive use of the equipment to enhance their livelihoods and support their families.

The MCE said the Assembly had put together a monitoring team to ensure the items were used for the intended purposes.

He also highlighted a government commitment, stating that President John Dramani Mahama is rolling out free university education for all physically challenged students who gain admission into tertiary institutions.

According to him, the policy aims to make higher education more accessible and inclusive by covering full fees for persons with disabilities enrolled in Public Tertiary Institutions, emphasizing that the initiative is not an act of charity but an act of justice and equality.

The Wassa Amenfi East MP, Nicholas Amankwah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

He announced plans to increase the disability fund from 3% to 5%, pending parliamentary approval, to support more PWDs and improve their living conditions.

Hon. Amankwah encouraged PWDs to reject feelings of inferiority, emphasizing that disability is not a limitation.

He cited the inspiring example of Hon. Dr. Henry Seidu Daanaa, a visually impaired lawyer who served as Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, as proof that PWDs can excel with determination and support.

The MP pledged to work with the Wassa Amenfi East MCE to provide assistance and empowerment programs for PWDs, aiming to uplift their well-being.

He also reiterated the government’s support for learners with special needs, including a proposal to introduce free education across all special and integrated schools starting January 2026.
