The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwatey, has announced that any party member holding a government office must resign six months before contesting for any other position within the party.

During a press conference on Thursday, January 29, 2026, he explained that there are numerous capable individuals within the party who can step into vacant positions, asserting that one person should hold two positions simultaneously.

“Our party has so many people who are capable to hold positions in the party, so one person cannot hold two positions,” he stated.

Mr. Kwatey clarified that this requirement does not apply to chairpersons and board members, as they are not full-time employees.

He outlined the affected offices, which include deputy ministers, chief executive officers, managing directors and their deputies, as well as metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives.

“So those are the three main categories that we mentioned under paragraph one. The affected offices under paragraph one include, they are not limited to,” he stated.

He also specified the resignation timeline for those intending to contest at different levels.

“Those intending to contest at the constituency level shall resign by April 2026, those intending to contest at the regional level shall resign by May 2026, and those intending to contest at the national level shall resign by June 2026,” Mr Kwetey stated.

He stressed and noted that this provision aligns with the party’s constitution and will be enforced without exceptions.

“Please don’t even bother to come and see whether you can plead to be exempted because there is no plea in this matter,” he urged.
