President John Dramani Mahama has been ranked 5th on the Devex list of the world’s most powerful development changemakers.
This recognition follows his assumption of the presidency in January for a non-consecutive second term, having previously served as President from 2012 to 2016.
With a rich political background, Mahama has served as Vice President, a parliamentarian, and in various ministerial roles.
He was also the first co-chair of the UN Advocacy Group on Sustainable Development Goals.
Mahama’s inclusion on the list stems from his advocacy for a new deal for African development, focusing on debt relief, trade reform, and climate finance.
He emphasizes Africa’s need to renegotiate its global economic position.
In August, Mahama hosted leaders and experts in Accra, launching a vision for African health sovereignty, stressing national ownership and global cooperation.
This led to the “Accra Reset,” aiming to end traditional development approaches and promote new models, with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo advising him.
