The incumbent President of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), Charles Osei Asibey, has declared his intention to seek re-election at the next Congress to elect leaders.

The Ghanaian has been in office for four years and seven months, working closely with member nations to strengthen structures, expand participation, and enhance Africa’s visibility within the global armwrestling community.

In a statement issued on Monday, March 2, 2026, Mr. Asibey stated that he has officially filed his nomination to contest for the prestigious presidential position.

He explained that his decision is based on a strong conviction that African armwrestling is at a pivotal moment in its history, motivated by encouragement from member federations and athletes.

He added that his goal is to prioritize the federation’s development, expand competitive platforms, promote grassroots and youth development, increase women’s participation and inclusion, form strategic partnerships, and mobilize sponsorships and capacity building for member federations.

Mr. Asibey highlighted the experience gained during his first term, noting valuable insights into both the opportunities and challenges faced by the sport.

“Together, we have made significant progress, improving governance systems, increasing the number of active member federations, expanding continental competitions, and raising Africa’s profile in international armwrestling.

“While we have achieved much, we must deepen institutional reforms, enhance compliance standards, and ensure every member federation receives structured development support.

“Africa is rich in talent, passion, and potential. What we need now is consistent, experienced leadership to build on our foundation, drive innovation, and create measurable impact,” he said.

The presidential candidate respectfully urges Ghanaians, whose steadfast support has been integral to his leadership, to continue standing behind this continental vision.

“I also call on the armwrestling community and stakeholders across Africa to unite in purpose and support a shared agenda focused on growth, integrity, and excellence.

“Together, we can build a stronger, more unified, and globally competitive Africa. Let us consolidate our gains and move forward together,” stated the General Secretary of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG).
