Assin South: Over 15,000 NPP supporters including parliamentary aspirant defect to NDC

More than 15,000 supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Assin South Constituency, including a former parliamentary aspirant, Joseph Kofi Nyarko-Damptey, have reportedly defected to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr. Nyarko-Damptey contested for the NPP parliamentary candidate slot at Assin South in 2016, 2020 and 2024, but lost on all occasions to incumbent Member of Parliament, John Ntim Fordjour.

The major defection was announced at the NDC Constituency Office at Assin Ngresi in the Assin South District of the Central Region. Mr. Kofi-Damptey was officially presented with an NDC membership card by the Central Regional Vice Chairman of the party, Dr. Shaibu Bukari, to formally signify his admission into the NDC.

Speaking to the media after the ceremony, he explained that his decision was influenced by the NDC’s development agenda and what he described as the achievements of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration within its first year in office.

He called on his supporters to rally behind him and support the NDC’s agenda, while also urging them to uphold the party’s principles, discipline, and unity.

Some of the defectors, many of whom were formerly aligned with the NPP, accused the party of taking their loyalty for granted, explaining that their decision to join the NDC was largely influenced by their continued support for Mr. Nyarko-Damptey.

The Deputy Central Regional Secretary of the NDC, Eric Offei Esq., who spoke on behalf of the party, welcomed the defectors and described their decision as a ‘clear indication of the NDC’s growing appeal and commitment to development and good governance.’
