Parliament’s Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on the government to launch an immediate, transparent investigation into the recent rise in aircraft crashes in Ghana, with results the public can actually see.

His demand follows a recent aircraft crash in Tema.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, he said there should be a complete review of Ghana’s aviation laws to protect citizens on the ground.

He urged that the investigation be full, transparent, independent and time-bound, to determine the cause of the crash and to review licences, certifications, maintenance and operational procedures, and to recommend corrective measures to prevent recurrence.

“This incident raises serious questions that demands answers, how was a prively own microlight aircraft allow to operate over a densely populated corridor with such a devastating consequence, we’re all safety protocols, maintenance procedures and pilot certification strictly observed, what regulatory oversight persistence and why did it fail to prevent this disaster as well as could this tragedy have been prevented with stronger monitoring and enforce?”

Afenyo-Markin asserted that relevant authorities must detail the cause of the crash and identify any lapses in licences, certification, maintenance and operations.

He also called for a review and strengthening of aviation safety protocols for all microlight and private aircraft, and for adequate resourcing of investigative and regulatory bodies to ensure rigorous monitoring and enforcement.

“This tragedy must compel government to enforce safety regulations, strengthen oversight and protect the lives of all Ghanaians,” he stated.
