The University of Ghana (UG) has secured the 2026 Honda Football Championship title, overcoming a resilient University for Development Studies (UDS) in a tense final at the weekend.

In a tournament defined by grit and tactical discipline, the Legon-based side proved their mettle, bouncing back from an early setback to claim the prestigious trophy.

The victory marks a significant milestone for UG, who showcased both clinical finishing and defensive solidity throughout the campaign.

The final began with a clinical display of intent. While spectators were still finding their seats, UG’s number 11, Mamudu Farouk, silenced the UDS supporters by capitalising on a lapse in the opposition’s concentration.

Farouk found the back of the net within the opening 60 seconds, a strike that dictated the tempo for the remainder of the match.

UDS fought valiantly to restore parity, throwing men forward in search of an equaliser. However, they found themselves stifled by a disciplined UG backline that refused to buckle under pressure.

The 1-0 scoreline remained intact until the final whistle, sparking jubilant scenes for the new champions.

UG’s path to the podium was far from straightforward. Their journey through the group stages tested their resolve early on, where they secured two wins but suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).

The knockout stages proved even more testing during a tactical stalemate against the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).

After the match ended 0-0, UG demonstrated superior composure in the subsequent penalty shoot-out, winning 4-1 to book their place in the final.

The 2026 Honda Football Championship continues to be a premier platform for spotting emerging talent within Ghana’s tertiary institutions.

The tournament is powered by Honda and Overseas Union Ltd, the sole distributors of Honda Motorcycles in Ghana, and produced by RITE Sports Services.

Their continued investment in collegiate sport remains a cornerstone of athletic development in the region.

With this win, the University of Ghana cements its reputation as a powerhouse of Ghanaian student football, leaving UDS to rue what might have been in a closely contested final.
