Black Stars’ weak performance tied to communication, says Sonnie Badu

Ghanaian gospel musician, Sonnie Badu, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding the performance of the Ghana national football team following their recent struggles on the international stage.

The Black Stars came under heavy criticism after suffering a humiliating 5-1 defeat to the Austria national football team in a pre-World Cup friendly on Friday, March 27, 2026. The result has since intensified public scrutiny over the team’s form and overall readiness.

Reacting to the situation, Sonnie Badu suggested that the challenges facing the team go beyond talent and coaching.

According to him, the root of the problem lies in poor communication and lack of team cohesion among players.

Sharing his views in a social media post on March 30, 2026, he noted that although the squad possesses undeniable quality, there appears to be a disconnect in unity and understanding on the pitch.

“The Black Stars’ struggles aren’t due to a lack of skill among players; rather, it’s the language barrier and communication issues that hinder their performance. In my opinion, the success of players like Asamoah Gyan, Baffour Gyan, Stephen Appiah, and Michael Essien can be attributed to their long-standing camaraderie, which dates back to their junior national team days. To achieve greatness, it’s essential that we provide language training to some of our players, enabling them to grasp the nuances of our local football terminologies,” he wrote.
