I expected Mahama to apologise for his attacks on Akufo-Addo over Russian-Ukraine war – Krobea Asante

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) deputy communications director, George Krobea Asante, has called on President Mahama to apologise to Ghanaians for criticising Nana Akufo-Addo when the Russia–Ukraine war began.

Speaking on Angel FM on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, he said that when Akufo-Addo told Ghanaians that the Russia–Ukraine war was driving up fuel prices, Mahama disputed the claim, questioning why tensions in the Middle East are now causing fuel-price increases.

He recalled that, as a candidate, Mahama said the Russia–Ukraine war was about 7,000 miles away and therefore should not have affected the Ghanaian economy; therefore, for that reason, Akufo-Addo should not use that as a justification.

“When Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia was telling Ghanaians that the Russian-Ukraine war is the factor that is causing fuel price increase John Mahama as a candidate said Russian is about 7,000 miles away and can not affect Ghanaian economy, today Mahama is telling us that, now they have seen that the Iran Israel USA war is driving high fuel price, he didn’t even apologise to Ghanaians,” he stated.

Mr. Krobea stressed that external factors beyond the country’s control, such as fuel, cement and iron-rod prices, should not be politicised.

He accused Mahama of political expediency, saying the former candidate’s remarks damaged the NPP’s reputation and influenced voters.

“Today fuel price has increased than NPP’s time so clearly the government must admit that, that statement he made some time ago is reckless, it was needless, it was misleading, it was unacceptable for a whole candidate who had the potential to become a president to come and tell the people of Ghana that external factors have any impact on Ghanaian economy,” he said.

Mr. Krobea further argued that the NPP should not be blamed for using the war as a justification for fuel-price rises.

He urged President Mahama to apologise to Ghanaians before they could accept any explanation about fuel-price increases attributed to tensions in the Middle East.
