The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has raised concerns over safety risks associated with converted Toyota Voxy vehicles, particularly those altered from right-hand drive (RHD) to left-hand drive (LHD).

In a statement, the Authority said a Technical Working Group established to assess the safety and operational suitability of the vehicles has identified significant risks stemming from both the structural conversion and their use for commercial passenger transport.

“The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) wishes to inform the public of safety concerns associated with Toyota Voxy vehicles that have been converted from right-hand drive (RHD) to left-hand drive (LHD),” the statement said.

According to the NRSA, the Toyota Voxy is originally manufactured exclusively as a right-hand drive vehicle, and the manufacturer does not approve its conversion due to safety concerns.

The Authority explained that converting these vehicles requires extensive modifications to key components such as steering, braking systems, dashboards, electrical systems, and suspension, which may compromise the overall integrity of the vehicle.

The statement further noted that many of these conversions are carried out without formal standards, certification, or regulatory oversight, increasing the likelihood of mechanical failure and unsafe operation.

It also emphasized that the Toyota Voxy was designed as a family minivan and not intended for commercial passenger transport, especially for long-distance travel.

It added that the NRSA observed that some vehicles registered for private use are being deployed for commercial passenger services, in violation of regulatory requirements.

In light of these concerns, the Authority cautioned the public about the risks involved and urged strict adherence to safety regulations by vehicle owners and operators.

“Passengers are advised against patronising Toyota Voxy vehicles, particularly for long-distance travel,” the statement cautioned.

The NRSA also advised operators against using privately registered vehicles for commercial purposes and urged importers to refrain from bringing in right-hand drive Toyota Voxy vehicles intended for conversion.
