Traditional leaders and residents of Berekum have taken to the streets to demonstrate against the growing threat of illegal mining (galamsey) in Amomaso and surrounding communities.
Chief of Kato and Wirempehene of the Berekum Traditional Area, Nana Owusu Ansah, emphasized that they are not opposed to mining but will not tolerate irresponsible and illegal activities.
“We are not against mining, but we will not allow any form of illegal or irresponsible community mining in our area,” he said.
The protesters have petitioned key stakeholders, including Members of Parliament for Berekum East and West, the Berekum Municipal and West Assemblies, the Berekum Traditional Council, and the Minerals Commission, urging them to refrain from issuing permits for community mining or galamsey activities.
MP for Berekum East, Simon Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, received the petition and pledged his support, assuring protesters he will present their concerns to the relevant authorities.
