Mahama assures completion of Saglemi housing project

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has assured Ghanaians that his government will complete the long-delayed Saglemi Affordable Housing Project as part of efforts to solve the country’s growing housing needs.

He explained that Ghana is becoming more urban, and this will increase pressure on housing in major cities.

“Today, more than half of Ghana’s population lives in towns and cities. By 2050, it could rise to about 70%,” he said.

“Cities like Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi will continue to grow quickly. Many people will move there from other parts of the country. If we do not act fast and on a large scale, the housing problem will become worse than what we see today.”

Speaking at the sod-cutting of the Green City Project at Dedesua in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, May 9, 2026, President Mahama said housing is a key part of his government’s development plan.

“The reset agenda is not just a slogan. It is our plan to change how we provide housing, roads and opportunities for our people,” he said.

“We believe that decent housing is not only for a few people. It is a right for every Ghanaian.”

He added that good housing helps improve health, education and productivity.

“Housing improves health, helps children learn better, increases work output and builds stronger communities,” he said.

“A country that wants to develop must make sure its people live in dignity.”

The President said government is working on a full housing plan that will increase supply, make homes more affordable, improve building standards and review housing finance systems.

He also confirmed that work on the Saglemi housing project will continue.

“The Saglemi affordable housing project, started under the previous NDC government, is now being prioritised for completion,” he said.

He added that new housing projects will also be started at the district level to help more people own homes.

“We are also introducing social housing projects in districts to reduce the cost of owning a home,” he said.

President Mahama further stressed that housing development will not be limited to big cities only.

“Housing must not be only in Accra or other major cities. Regional and district capitals must also benefit,” he said.

The Saglemi housing project, located in the Ningo-Prampram District, was started to provide affordable homes but has faced delays over the years. The government now says it is working to complete it and expand housing across the country.
